In a previous post, I’ve talked about the importance of switching your makeup routine to suit the cold weather. Your skin has the tendency to become paler and drier with the cold winter air. Hence, switching to hydrating formulas such as creams and liquid formulas are recommended. But did you know that you must also put more thought into wearing a winter-appropriate blush? When your tan has faded, using rusty and bold pink tones on your cheeks just won’t cut it anymore. You must switch to peachy, neutral pink or nude shades to suit your lighter skin tone. You will find out more below about using the right blush for winter.
The first step in finding a winter-appropriate blush is to know your skin tone. Check out the guide below to help you shop for the right blush:
Light/Fair Skin
If you have naturally light skin, finding winter-appropriate blush is extremely challenging since the winter air can make your skin look paler than usual. Your goal is to create a fun but believable pop of colour on your cheeks. Opt for a pale pink blush to give a natural flush of colour to your cheeks. Since you have fair skin, using a bright pink blush might seem unnatural or overly done. Baby pink provides a natural and subtle glow. If you can’t find a baby pink blush, peach and sheer plum are good alternatives.

Medium Skin
This is the easiest type of skin tone to choose a blush for during winter. Some medium skin tones have a flush of warmth to their skin; hence, choose winter-appropriate blush for this skin type that is designed to enhance that warmth. Try not to over-do or opt for blush tones that are too dark as it will look fake! Choose a soft, flirty and fresh shade like apricot, muted mauve or medium pink.

Dark Skin
If you find fair skin to be challenging to find a blush for, the same is true with dark complexion. In fact, dark skin tones don’t exhibit colour very well, so finding a winter-appropriate blush is even harder. Raisin shades are recommended by experts, though. It has a deep-orange tone that gives the appearance of the colour coming from your own skin and not from the blush itself. That is the kind of shade you should be going for when buying blush for winter. You can also choose a bright tangerine – since your skin tone is already on the dark side, it will be surprising to see how that bright shade ends up looking neutral on your skin.
