How to Prevent Hair Product Allergies

Hair product allergy is more common than most people think. In some cases, you see symptoms but is not aware that it is already an allergic reaction to the product. This, therefore, serves as a wake up call to all women out there when buying products to use on their hair: be cautious and always check the ingredients to avoid contraindications.

Another important word of caution is that allergic reactions are not all minor. Some can be life threatening. Hence, you need to be more cautious what you put on your skin (like your scalp) and hair to avoid this from happening.

Hair dye is the most common source of allergic reaction, amongst all hair products in the market. The most common symptom of allergic reaction due to hair dye is the presence of a mild rash. Make sure to see your doctor as soon as you see rashes appear, especially if they weren’t there prior to using hair dye.

This is the reason why all cosmetic product manufacturers (including hair products) suggest undergoing a sensitivity test prior to using the product. This will give you enough time to determine if a product causes allergic reactions or not before using it to a certain degree.

The tricky thing about allergic reactions is that this will not just happen on new products you’ve tried. It is also possible to develop allergic reactions on products that you have been using for years. The reason for this is that your skin has developed sensitivity to the substance resulting in rash formation, sneezing, and watery eyes, among other things.

How Allergic Reactions Happen

Aside from the factors mentioned above, here are a few reasons to consider why allergic reactions occur:

1. It could be a change in the chemical composition of a certain hair product. This explains why you could develop allergies from a product you have been using for a long time. Take time to identify the ingredients contained in the product you use. If you are aware about certain allergens causing harsh reactions to your skin and body, make sure to avoid it.

2. A product that has exceeded its expiry date can also lead to allergic reactions. Hence, always check the bottle for its expiration date before you decide to use the product.

3. Since majority of the cases of allergic reactions on hair products arise from use of hair dyes, be very cautious when getting a new hair colour. Even though it might sound tempting because “at-home hair colour” kits are affordable than getting your colour done at the salon, there are several risks involved with the former. The PPD chemical or Para-phenylenediamine is the culprit behind allergic reactions from the use of hair dyes. Steer clear of hair dyes containing this chemical.

In the event of allergic reaction, especially once that are serious, get medical help immediately. Never self-diagnose or try to treat the problem at home. There are risks to fatality involving allergies and you would not want to risk it.
