Shanghai Suzy is a cult lipstick brand that is all the rage on social media right now. This is a Melbourne-based lipstick brand that is known not just for its bold and bright colours, but also for being vegan and cruelty-free. It is therefore not a surprise how the brand has grown exponentially as it earned the love of beauty lovers in Australia, as well as those who love to support sustainable brands.
Who’s Behind Shanghai Suzy Lipsticks?
‘Perfectly chic and cheap’. This is how founder Joanna French would describe the brand she built. With a reasonable price starting at $14.95, it is easy to amass a full collection of the brand’s lipstick range. French used to work as a cosmetic marketing executive when she found herself craving for certain lip colours. Certain lip colours go with certain looks, she claims.
She found a gap in the beauty market, especially in the lipstick niche. There wasn’t a lot of options available for women who were looking for cheap yet chic lipstick colours that did not compromise quality and packaging. Most of the options were either too expensive or cheap but low in quality. This is how the idea to build Shanghai Suzy lipsticks came about. A simple desire to resolve the most basic of beauty problem that a lot of women her age encountered.
This was in 2010 when she built that dream of creating her own lipstick brand. Fast forward to 6 years when she had that vision, Shanghai Suzy Lipsticks have become one of the most popular brands in Australia. Her brand was launched in 2013 and and today, she has sold over 200,000 lipsticks! Her brand is also available in over 500 stores all over Australia – online or locally.
The leap from a frustrated customer to a business owner was not an easy one. Joanna French would even say that her journey to get where her brand is today was unglamorous. She also markets her lipstick brand like a fashion brand. There are seasonal collections that are released twice a year. This is one way to ensure that she has fresh options available so her clientele would have many new shades to choose from. As a bonus, the affordable price range makes it a good deal and is part of the main draws to her brand.
