Your Guide to Excellent Self-Tanning Results

Spring and summer is a time to hit the beach, enjoy the sun and flaunt some skin. If you’ve been planning to get a tan, now is the best time to do so. Going to a tanning salon regularly can lead costs to add up, though. Thankfully, the advent of self-tanners eliminate the need to do so. You can enjoy the perfect tan even in the comfort of your own home (sunless, at that). Make sure you know how to use these products safely and to make the most of your new skin tone to look ready to have fun this spring and summer.

Tanning Isolated

To get a flawless tan that will leave people wondering how the stuff just came out of the bottle, read these tips:

Get everything else done first. If you are planning to do a self-tan, make sure you take care of other treatments such as waxing, shaving or getting a new manicure. All of these treatments can wash out any self-tanning product you use.

Remove old tanning products. If this isn’t the first time you are applying a self tanning product, do yourself a favor by making sure that there are no residues left from the previous product you have used. This can be made possible by doing a gentle scrub on your body and exfoliating your skin. Self tanners have the ability to sink deep within your skin and can leave behind dark patches. These can make your skin colour look unnatural and you do not want any of that. Also, you have to remember that a clean and clear skin provides the best canvas for your tan.

Depilate at least 24 hours prior to self tanning. As mentioned above, you need to do your shaving or depilating before you apply the self tanner. However, give your skin at least 24 hours in between treatment to ensure that it has calmed down and also to keep it gentle on your skin.

Make sure skin is completely dry. This tip might be obvious but it has to be pointed out for an important reason – this will ensure effective absorption of the tanning product. Towel your skin dry and wait for at least ten minutes before applying the product.

Give it time. One of the biggest mistakes that women make when using self-tanners (especially first timers) is to hastily tan themselves. Always read the product label for instructions on how long you should leave the product on. Majority of the products in the market require at least half an hour, though. Give it the time it needs to avoid experiencing blotches and an unrefined finish.

Choose the right tanning formula. When shopping for a self-tanning product, it is important that you take the time to assess your natural skin tone. If you have pale skin, choose a tan with a gradual tan formula as they do not tan much when exposed to the sun. But if you have a medium coloured skin, select a formula with a light texture so you do not end up with an overly dark tan finish. A spray formula, on the other hand, is great for women with naturally olive skin for an intense tanning effect. And a tanning formula specially formulated for dark skinned women is what you need to look for if you have this type of skin tone.

Work your way up. The ideal process for applying self tanning products is to start from the bottom, specifically from the ankle. Then, gradually work your way up towards the top part of the body.

Are you a fan of tanning? Have you tried tanning on your own or do you always go to the salon?
